U.S. ISPs to test restricting heavy Internet users

On June 3rd, 2008, two United States Internet service providers (ISPs) announced they would begin tests to slow web access for their most active customers and charge them for extra speed. Comcast and Time Warner Cable, two of the largest ISPs in North America, both made separate announcements of their plans. The actions come in the wake of an investigation by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), over whether Comcast had restricted some customers from sharing videos, music, and similar files. Which is Better - Shorter URLs or Long and Descriptive Ones?

Having shorter URLs to your blog posts has its advantages -

  • Shorter URLs can be used by the print media like newspapers/magazines to link to the online content
  • Readers can quickly share shorter links via email/IM to their friends without worrying about sending incorrect URL due to formatting errors during copy-paste

At the same time, short URLs do not describe the content of the page and hence are not as search engine friendly as longer ones. SEO experts suggest using descriptive URLs. Rahul Krishnakumar Vaid, a Gurgaon lad, learnt it the hard way when he was arrested for posting obscene comments about Sonia Gandhi on the community ‘I hate Sonia Gandhi’.
